Entries open for Science Prizes

$1 million is on offer to promote science and innovation in New Zealand.

A feature of the prizes is encouraging future scientists. $50,000 towards tertiary study fees will be awarded to an outstanding secondary school student and $150,000 for an outstanding science teacher.

Last year, the winner of the student prize was 17-year-old Hannah Ng, who spent four years researching childhood myopia, or short-sightedness.

The teacher’s prize was awarded to Papatoetoe High School’s Head of Chemistry Peter Stewart, for greatly increasing interest in the subject among students.

Prizes also went to Distinguished Professor Paul Moughan and Professor Harjinder Singh of Massey’s Riddet Institute, science journalist Professor Shaun Hendy, and Dr James Russell, of the University of Auckland.

This year’s entries for the prizes opened on 23 April and can be lodged up until 17 July 2013.
