The first New Zealand team made it to the Astronomy Olympiad this year, but a new team is needed for 2014.

We spoke to Haritina Mogosanu of Kiwispace recently about the first New Zealand team to compete in the International Astronomy Olympiad.

She helped to organize a group of four secondary school students to train, travel, and take part in the international event , which was held in Greece in August of this year.

Read more about their experience here.

Expressions of interest are now being sought from current Year 12 students who would like to attend the 2014 Olympiad in Romania.

It is expected that applicants are:

-          Attaining ‘Excellence’ grades in Year 12 physics, maths, or ESSE

-          Familiar with astronomy

-          Prepared to do extra study and practice for the Olympiad

-          Good team players and problem solvers

-          New Zealand citizens with valid passports.

This 2014 team will again be supported by the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand, both financially and educationally. A representative from this society will accompany the students to the Olympiad.

Students are also expected to contribute around $1500 towards the costs of their own travel.

Interested students can email : ioaa.edu@rasnz.org.nz to register their interest.

The RASNZ Olympiad organising committee will contact applicants in December with an assignment to complete. Further training will be arranged to best suit the locations of students. Final team selection will be made in March 2014.
